NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy

The NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy became effective for competing grant applications submitted for the January 25, 2015, receipt date; contract proposals submitted to NIH on or after January 25, 2015; and for intramural projects generating genomic data on or after August 31, 2015. The NIH GDS Policy applies to all NIH-funded research (e.g., grants, contracts, and intramural research) that generates large-scale human or non-human genomic data, regardless of the funding level, as well as the use of these data for subsequent research. Large-scale data include genome-wide association studies (GWAS), single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) arrays, and genome sequence, transcriptomic, epigenomic, and gene expression data.

Genomic Data Resources

Database of Genomic Structural Variation (dbVar)
dbVar is NCBI's database of genomic structural variation – insertions, deletions, duplications, inversions, mobile element insertions, translocations, and complex chromosomal rearrangements.
Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes(dbGaP)
The database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP) was developed to archive and distribute the data and results from studies that have investigated the interaction of genotype and phenotype in Humans.
Database of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (dbSNP)
Database of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and multiple small-scale variations that include insertions/deletions, microsatellites, and non-polymorphic variants.
GenBank
GenBank ® is the NIH genetic sequence database, an annotated collection of all publicly available DNA sequences.
Gene
Gene integrates information from a wide range of species. A record may include nomenclature, Reference Sequences (RefSeqs), maps, pathways, variations, phenotypes, and links to genome-, phenotype-, and locus-specific resources worldwide.
Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO)
GEO is a public functional genomics data repository supporting MIAME-compliant data submissions. Array- and sequence-based data are accepted. Tools are provided to help users query and download experiments and curated gene expression profiles.
Gene Expression Omnibus Datasets
This database stores curated gene expression DataSets, as well as original Series and Platform records in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) repository. Enter search terms to locate experiments of interest. DataSet records contain additional resources including cluster tools and differential expression queries.
Genome Data Viewer
GDV is a genome browser supporting the exploration and analysis of more than 380 eukaryotic RefSeq genome assemblies.
International Genome Sample Resource (IGSR) from the 1000 Genomes Project
The 1000 Genomes Project ran between 2008 and 2015, creating the largest public catalogue of human variation and genotype data. As the project ended, the Data Coordination Centre at EMBL-EBI has received continued funding from the Wellcome Trust to maintain and expand the resource.
RefSeq
The Reference Sequence (RefSeq) collection provides a comprehensive, integrated, non-redundant, well-annotated set of sequences, including genomic DNA, transcripts, and proteins. RefSeq sequences form a foundation for medical, functional, and diversity studies.
