This guide describes the research data services that are available through Welch Medical Library at Johns Hopkins University. Hopkins members may find the registration link on this page to inquire about services and schedule a consultation meeting.

Types of Data Support

The Data Informationist at Welch Medical Library supports researchers along various points of the research data lifecycle. Virtual consultations are available for the following services:

  • Research Planning: This service helps researchers, particularly those in the early career phase, learn about the various aspects of managing research data (e.g., informed consent considerations, data use policies for secondary use, sharing data in repositories).
  • Search Strategy: This service helps researchers find publication data on a topic of interest using academic search engines (e.g., Dimensions, Web of Science).
  • Data Access: This service helps researchers find secondary data to answer new research questions, replicate findings, and/or substantiate the need for more research in a particular area. To find a list of recommended data repositories to access data, navigate to this website.
  • Survey Data Collection: This service guides researchers and staff through best practices for survey development (e.g., how to write quality survey items, data analysis considerations).

Who Can Request Services

Services are available to researchers affiliated with the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, or Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins. Faculty, staff, post-docs, residents, and fellows, who are members of the aforementioned schools, are welcome to inquire about services.
