What is scholarly/academic publishing?
Scholarly publishing/academic publishing is defined as the following:
“A subfield of publishing which distributes academic research and scholarship.”
Scholarly Publishing has 4 Goals:
- Describe the research
- Evaluate its reliability and reproducibility
- Disseminate through many outlets and channels
- Preserve what has been accomplished in the past for future use.
Key Characteristics of Academic Publishing:
- Often published in academic journal article, book, or thesis form
- Often based on some form of peer review or editorial refereeing to qualify texts for publication
- Different from grey literature, which includes materials outside of traditional peer-reviewed journal articles and books (e.g., government reports, conference proceedings, working paper, and preprints
