Finding Gene Attributes Using NCBI Gene

This guide introduces the NCBI Gene database and provides a workflow for using it to find gene attributes.

Reasons for Using Gene

Use the Gene database to:

  • Explore multiple aspects of a single gene (e.g., expression, genomic context, sequence, gene ontology, etc.)

  • Retrieve lists of genes that meet specific criteria (e.g., organism, disease association, exon count, etc.)

  • Find similar genes (orthologs) in other organisms

Gene's Repository Role

In its repository role, Gene includes certain information right in its records.

Information immediately accessible from Gene records includes:

Gene's Connecting Role

In its connecting role, Gene records link out to information maintained by other resources within and outside of NCBI.

  • OMIM (human genotype/phenotype)
  • Ensembl (comparable to Gene with sometimes better tools)
  • UniProt (protein data)
