Citing

Citations are a way of documenting where we found important concepts/ideas that we used in our own work.

There are 2 types of citations:

  1. In-text citations: these are citations that are found within the text of your paper, right next to the information that needs to be cited
    • There are some key elements of complete in-text citations.
      • Located within the text of the paper
      • Contains the last name of the author(s), date of publication, and page number if applicable
      • Citation information is added before the period within parentheses in the sentence where the information is included
  2. Full citations: this is usually found at the end of your paper as an alphabetical large listing – it is sometimes referred to as interchangeably as bibliography or reference list.

Here are some of the major biomedical citation styles:

  • APA – used commonly in medical publishing as well as in the social sciences and education
  • AMA - used for medical research, public health, biomedical research, and the health sciences.
  • National Library of Medicine (NLM)/Vancouver Style – used commonly in medicine and sciences; it is maintained by the National Library of Medicine.
