NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy

This guide supports researchers' efforts to comply with the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy. It offers step-by-step guidance on how to plan for data sharing and write a data management and sharing plan to meet NIH requirements.

What Research is Covered by the Policy?

NIH makes clear what research is covered under its data management and sharing policy.

  • In general, the policy applies to scientific data that are of sufficient quality to validate and replicate research findings. See more about how NIH defines scientific data.
  • The policy applies to NIH-funded research that generates scientific data, including research projects and small business SBIR/STTR projects. It does not apply to funded research and other activities that don't generate scientific data, including training and fellowship awards.
  • The policy applies to grant applications submitted to NIH for January 25, 2023 and subsequent receipt dates.
  • Additional considerations apply to projects that produce large-scale genomic data, involve foreign collaborators, or generate proprietary data.

See NIH's "Research Covered Under the Data Management & Sharing Policy" page for more details.
