Guide Overview

This guide provides information for researchers who need help gathering, assessing, visualizing, promoting, and communicating research impact metrics. To learn how Welch Informationists can help you with this process, see our Research Metrics Service Core description.

Welch Research Metrics Service Core

Informationists provide instruction and consultations with individual faculty, research groups, institutes, departments or other units on topics such as:

  • Communicating research impact to audiences such as funders or promotion and tenure committees
  • Strategies and tools to manage and track research output
  • Identifying appropriate metrics for tracking impact of individuals or groups
  • Using data sources for research impact analysis, including the Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and InCites.
  • Improving the visibility of your research using identity management profile systems like ORCID, Scopus Author ID, and PURE (JHU Experts Research Profiles)
  • Using tools such as PlumX Metrics and Altmetric to measure and enhance research dissemination beyond citation counts using social media platforms

In addition, informationists may partner with research groups, institutes, departments or other units and use a wide collection of resources to provide services and reports for different purposes, including:

  • Bibliometric analysis and visualizations to provide an overview of research publications and other outputs by a specific group
  • Identifying the scope and pattern of research collaborations (e.g. author collaboration, institution collaboration, and country collaboration)
  • Identify patterns, trends, and gaps of research domains utilizing publication and/or other available data
